In this class, students will explore the hands-on artform of tapestry weaving. We will cover the warping of a frame loom, learn a variety of weaving techniques for creating pattern and, especially, texture. Materials will range from yarns and threads to wool roving and upcycled fabrics to really develop varied texture across your weaving. The fee for the class includes all materials. Learn how to sculpt organic forms with wool during this two-day, wet felting intensive with Fiber Artist, Mallory Zondag. You will learn a variety of wet felting techniques for creating flowers, leaves, stems, stamens and how to connect all of these elements to form realistic floral forms. We will also cover how to bring needle felting, stitching and beading into your felting work. Day one will cover techniques and processes for making a variety of these organic forms from peonies to roses to orchids and more. Day two will be an open studio format where students design their own unique floral arrangement and spend the day creating it, using the techniques from day one, with guidance from Mallory. 

Supply Fee Paid Directly to Instructor:  $45 supply cost per person which covers all materials: felting kit (that can be taken home), merino wool, silk fibers, wire, beads and other miscellaneous tools and materials needed for the project.

We'll focus on embroidering one small object; a mushroom, a moth, a lemon slice, etc. (students will choose what they want to make!) and through this learn how to work with varied satin stitch, blend colors and use thread to bring your image to life. No experience required. All materials included. Students will leave with a 6" hoop, assorted embroidery threads and embroidery needle to be able to continue their project on their own time.

Take your felting to the next level in this felted floral arrangement class. We will be working with superfine merino wool to create multi layered flowers such as peonies, roses, and carnations and working with hand stitching within the felting process to make elaborate and realistic felt flowers from scratch. We will also learn how to attach wired stems to flowers and leaves to create a fully formed small arrangement of felt flowers entirely designed by you! Using a mini frame loom and a variety of yarns and fibers such as wool roving, silk, and wool locks, you will learn how to weave patterns and textures to evoke the mossy magic of the forest floor, all set up on a wooden box frame so your weaving is ready to hang at the end of the session. The workshop will cover four different weaving techniques to bring your moss textile to life!

Floral Embroidery at Mabee Farm

Create your own colorful, textured, embroidery garden during this four hour workshop at the historic Mabee Farm! You will learn a variety of embroidery stitches that can be used to create everything from stems and leaves to hydrangeas, roses, daisies and even fringe moss!

No experience required All materials included. Students will leave with a 6" hoop, assorted embroidery threads and embroidery needle to be able to continue their project on their own time.

Felted Slippers @ SUNY SCC

Create your own custom wool felted slippers during this two-night felting workshop with the ancient process of wet felting. We will be working with wool roving, water, soap and use the power of our own two hands to transform the wool fibers into sculpted, wearable slippers. You will learn the process of the wet felting, three-dimensional wet felting and the process of felting over premade forms. This workshop will include some work that needs to be done before and after the workshop on the student's own time. You will receive instructions on how to create a last from recycled materials. (A last is a shoe form that will be custom molded to your feet so your slippers will fit you perfectly.) After the workshop when your slippers are perfectly dry, you will be able to add a sole to your slippers if desired. Those instructions and materials will be given to you at the workshop along with a demonstration so you can complete that task at your convenience. Get ready for winter by creating the coziest, handmade slippers to keep you warm and learn an ancient skill in the process!
